Typhoid Vaccine

Typhoid fever is a life-threatening infection caused by the salmonella Typhi bacteria, spread through contaminated food and drink.

What Is Typhoid Fever?

Typhoid fever is found all over the world, caused by the salmonella Typhi bacteria. Risk of contraction is higher in places that have poor sanitation and hygiene, such as Africa, South America, south and south-east Asia and the Indian subcontinent. If you’re travelling in these regions, it is advisable to have the typhoid vaccination, particularly if you’re going to be in Pakistan, India or Bangladesh, which is where most people in the UK contract the virus.

How Can You Prevent Typhoid Fever?

The best way to prevent contracting typhoid fever is to be vaccinated against it. It can also be beneficial to choose your food and drink carefully while travelling, as well as washing your hands thoroughly and more regularly. After you’ve been travelling and have returned home, if you feel sick and present with a fever, it would be advisable to get in touch with a healthcare professional to discuss your symptoms.

What Are The Symptoms Of Typhoid Fever?

Typhoid fever symptoms typically develop between one and two weeks after you’ve been infected with the salmonella Typhi bacteria. The main symptoms include:
  • A headache
  • A persistent high temperature that gradually gets worse each day
  • Aches and pains
  • Fatigue
  • A cough
  • Constipation
With treatment, your symptoms should start to improve within three to five days. However, if typhoid fever isn’t treated, it is likely that your symptoms will get worse over several weeks and it could become life-threatening. It can take weeks and even months to recover without treatment and it’s possible that your symptoms could come back.

How Can Typhoid Fever Be Treated?

Typically, typhoid fever can be treated successfully by taking a course of antibiotics, although hospital admission may be necessary if your symptoms are severe. It’s important to finish the prescribed course to ensure that the bacteria has been completely removed from your system. It’s also important to rest as much as possible, eat regular meals and drink plenty of fluids.

Is There A Typhoid Fever Vaccine?

In the UK, there are two main vaccines to help prevent typhoid fever. The Vi vaccine is administered as a single injection, while the Ty21a vaccine is administered as three capsules to be taken on alternate days. Note that the vaccine isn’t 100% effective, which is why it’s important to take other precautions while abroad, such as washing hands regularly and taking care with what you eat and drink. At Enimed Group, our pharmacies provide a range of different vaccinations, including the typhoid fever vaccine. Our specialist travel pharmacists can administer the appropriate treatments, as well as providing a walk-in clinic service and up-to-date travel health advice for your chosen destinations.
